I was inspired to create this zine when I learned about how much work goes into this fashion show through a lecture in my apparel industries class. Hearing about it made me wonder: How do designers come up with ideas? Is being a really good sketcher a prerequisite? Are they sewing everything themselves?Â
This zine was (selfishly) born out of my own curiosities, and while I started out wanting to learn more about the tangible process of designing a collection, I’ve learned more about what it really means to make something.
To create is one of the most vulnerable acts possible, and to show one’s creation to others is even more so. I’m proud of these designers for working hard on their creations, and having the courage to show them to others. I’m proud of myself for working hard on this zine as well. This project came with its own challenges, including other commitments, and motivation. But my enthusiasm to hear from the designers about progress on their latest piece, or learn something new about why someone loves fashion, kept me going.
A big thank you to Mira Carlson for the fantastic headshots she took of the designers, featured on everyone’s page.
I’d also like to send some love to my digital camera, a small black Sony from 2009. Many of the photos included were taken on that, and it’s probably my favorite thing that I own.Â
Thank you to Akshaya, Sofia, Dr. Deb, and all of the designers for being immensely supportive throughout the process, they made me feel so comfortable and welcome in an environment I had never been in before.Â
And thank you to my friends, who deserve the whole world <3
These are some really cool people, I hope y’all appreciate them as much as I do!!
Love,
Aashi :)
